The Modern Nomad: The Journey To Riyadh
After three years of Geneva, the Nomad was sent to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It is his belief that
it was his destiny that lead him to the Arabian sands (and not his father's job). Regardless, Riyadh is,
as the intelligent readers might already know, the capital of Saudi Arabia. Thus, the Nomad was moving to
an embassy, not a consulate.
This is crucial because in an embassy, there is a much larger staff, and many more families living abroad,
than in comparison to a consulate. Therefore, there would be more kids for the Nomad to mess with and befriend
during the three years he was going to live there. Splendid.
The Nomad resided in what is called the Diplomatic Quarters. This is a huge piece of land, some ways from the city,
that is completely secluded to the general public, and exclusively lets only government officials, their families, and
other high rank officials to enter the premisis. It is heavily fortified, fenced and guarded throughout all hours of
the day. The Indian embassy itself was located inside the Diplomatic Quarters, therefore all the Indian officials living
there simply had a 10 minute walk at most to their place of work. Sheer bliss for my lazy father.
The climate in Riyadh is what an average person would call "desert hot." During the day the sun is constantly scorching
and burning your skin off, and at night, despite the sun's absence, sweating bullets was a common phenomenon. Even if you
stepped outside the comfort of your AC to, lets say, throw out the garbage, by the time you make it back safely to your
house, you will have lost 5 kg of water from your body and will be suffering from severe dehydration*.
(*Exaggerated to make a point.)
All in all, Riyadh is a place of many extremes, from the weather to the wealthy. The Nomad highly recommends one to travel
there if given the chance to. It is a sight to behold, and an experience you will never forget. The people are very hospitable,
and this city is excellent at dismissing all misconceptions and stereotypes that are constatly regurgitated in the media in
Western societies. The Nomad highly encourages you to go and see this shimmering Arabian jewel of beauty.
Enough chatter for now, below are some images collected by the Nomad of Riyadh and it's wonderful sights. Feel free to browse
