MY NEIGHBOURHOOD:
TORRE SPACCATA

Here there's a map of the area (zoom in!):

I really like my neighbourhood, as I feel it's a very calm and relaxing part of the roman outskirt, with lots of quiet spaces. This neighbourhood is mostly populated by young families as well as retired people. Nevertheless, its parks are always packed and crowded with teenagers.
My parents moved here when I was three but honestly I don't remember of living anywhere else.
I must confess I actually came to know well my neighbourhood just in these last three years of pandemic.
During COVID times many people living in overpopulated or unpleasant neighbourhood suffered
an even more severe isolation. This is because in our cities most neighbourhoods don't have open or
green spaces, and -if there are- they're not sufficient to accomodate all residents. Torre Spaccata
-however- proved to be a very nice place to be during lockdowns because -given the movement
constraints we underwent- you could have green and open spaces really close to your home.

THE HISTORY OF THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

The main streets of the neighbourhood are dedicated to a group of scholars who sociologically described 19th and 20th century Rome, and they were thus called "I romanisti".
There's a great confusion around the name "Torre Spaccata", as it is often also associated to the more peripheral area adjoining the GRA.

In fact - on an administrative level - the term "Torre Spaccata" is used to indicate an area around "Via Walter Tobagi". The actual Torre Spaccata is part of what the city administration denominated "Don Bosco" area.
The first nucleus of the neighbourhood dates back to 15/08/1961, due to the implementation of the "Piano Fanfani" housing plan.
Unfortunately, as time went by, the area slowly transformed into a dorm neighbourhood.

This is because - after the great immigration from southern Italy in the 60s- the new residents
didn't manage to make it a lively environment. The buildings rarely have more than 4 floors, and Houseowners' committee devotes its energy to preserve the quietness of the neighbourhood.
