ZUG, SWITZERLAND GUIDE

History of Zug

Zug has a surprisingly rich and unique history for such a small Swiss canton. One fascinating fact is that the city was founded in the 13th century by the Counts of Kyburg specifically to control trade along Lake Zug. Its location made it a medieval economic hotspot. Zug also joined the Swiss Confederation very early, in 1352, playing an important role in battles between the Confederates and the Habsburgs. Another interesting detail is Zug's tradition of lowering taxes, which actually began hundreds of years ago as a way to compete with neighboring towns. This strategy eventually transformed the canton into one of the world's most business-friendly regions.
