Lawrence of Arabia
Simply put, Lawrence of Arabia (1962) is perhaps the best film epic of all time. The grandeur of the film can be observed in all facets of its production. David Lean's masterful direction of the film gives the original real life story from which this film was adapted from a supplemental richness. Coupled with a high production value and intricate attention to detail, Lean explores themes of personal identity and camaraderie within the restraints of historical conflict. The cinematography of the film, provided by Freddie Young has unsurprisingly been a source of inspiration for the great directors that followed Lawrence of Arabia. Along with the editing of the film, Young's work in the film immerses the viewer in the world of the story so profoundly that you can't help but marvel at the landscape and the film's strong symbolism. And to add to the emotion of the film, the cast delivers some of the best performances ever seen on the big screen. Peter O'Toole and Omar Sharif bring their characters to life and embody so much of the emotion and inner struggle that the story delivers. Lawrence of Arabia is truly a must-watch that should be at the top of any film enthusiast's list.
