The Sewing Cooperative creates opportunities for refugee tailors in Rome to bridge their previous professional experience with their newfound work environment, gain on the job experience, and adapt to living in Italy. We produce bespoke and artisanal products that are handmade and one of a kind, using recycled textiles, African wax print and naturally dyed organic cotton from Burkina Faso and Mali. We seek to bring our customers into the community with the makers of their clothing by building bridges, and cultivating cross cultural exchange and dialogue about diversity through textiles. We are currently doing this by welcoming clients to our design lab, near Piazza Vittorio in Rome where they can custom order garments or have alterations done. We also host a 2 hour fashion experience with Airbnb, that gives visitors the opportunity to learn about dressmaking and natural dying in West Africa, and then to co-design a garment, made just for them.
