Against Body Shaming

You're not alone, it's you and your body

Awareness

I Feel Pretty, a body positivity movement “I Feel Pretty” is a very controversial film starring Amy Schumer, Emily Ratajkowsky, Naomi Campbell, and other famous actresses. It was released in the United States in 2018.

For those who have not watched the film, it portrays the story of a woman who has self-esteem issues. She wants to apply for a job that requires her to be attractive, and decides to not to because she feels “not enough”. One day she expresses a desire to look attractive, and the next morning she wakes up feeling like one of the world’s hottest woman. She applies for the job and gets hired, and people start to notice her and value her. She develops so much confidence that she begins to behave like the rest of society, judging and condemning those who are different.

She only realizes her true physical appearance at the end of the film. She learns that it was only her mindset and acceptance of her body that changed, not her looks.

This film was highly criticized because reviewers feared it would encourage body shaming and the idea that having some fat indicates you don’t embrace your body type. It’s a comedy, after all, and the producers were understandably concerned about probable sensitive audience conflicts. Many unhappy comments have been made about the lead character, claiming that she didn’t have the right to feel awful about herself because of her appearance. To these critics, Amy Schumer responded that the image shown was simply of a woman with poor self-esteem looking for approval.

Personally, I believe that having the opportunity to analyze the situation through a lighthearted comedy is something that cannot hurt during such difficult times for everyone’s self-image. I identified with the main character because I sometimes have the impression that if only I acknowledged how beautiful I am and how much potential I have, I could accomplish so much in my life. We, as individuals, have the ability to achieve anything we desire; all we need to do is believe in ourselves. Our look is unimportant; we must learn to be comfortable in our own skin and to have more self-confidence.
