In 2014 Muholi turned the lens on themselves for the ongoing series, Somnyama Ngonyama (Hail the Dark Lioness). Shot in black-and-white, the photographs capture Muholi looking directly at the camera in a variety of poses and guises, sometimes wearing thick necklaces, large headpieces, and intricate hair clips.
