Sofia Coppola is an American director, screenwriter, and former actress. Sofia's career first began as an infant, when she portrayed infant Michael in The Godfather (1972) -- which was her father, Francis Ford Coppola's film.

She next had smaller, almost unnotcied roles in The Outsiders (1983), Rumble Fish (1983), and Peggy Sue Got Married(1986). In 1990, she portrayed Mary Coreleone in the final Godfather film, where she received overwhelming negative reviews for her performance. Coppola has gone one record that the reception bothered her little, as it was a favor for her father, after Winona Ryder - the orginal actress - dropped out of the role suddenly.

In 1999, Sofia broke out onto the scene as a director and screenwriter with The Virgin Suicides, adapted from the novel of the same name by Jeffrey Eucides. The film was well-received, with particular praise for Coppola's directorial prowess and the handling of themes of femininity and isolation.

Her next film, Lost in Translation (2003) garned her a win for Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards, as well as nominations for Best Director and Best Picture. She followed up this momentous film with Marie Antoinette (2006),Somewhere (2010), The Bling Ring (2013), The Beguiled (2017), On the Rocks (2020), and most recently, Priscilla (2023).

Sofia's films are notable for their exploration of isolation, loneliness, adolescence, priviledge, all from a female perspective. Her compassion and care for her female subjects (aside from The Bling Ring)is admirable. Whether it is an original or adpated screenplay, Coppola remains dedicated to depicting women as flawed and unique individuals -- much of which resonates with female audiences.
