Languages of Italy

About Me

My name is Vince, and I love languages and travel. I'm passionate about linguistics and language learning, and am currently studying Italian while exploring the culture and history of Italy firsthand. This site was created as a class project during my semester living in Rome.

The goal of this site is to raise awareness of the rich linguistic diversity of Italy, particularly the minority languages and regional dialects that are often overlooked, marginalized, or suppressed by national language policies. Many of these languages have deep historical roots and remain an essential part of regional identity.

How the Site Was Made

The site was built using basic HTML and CSS, with visual elements designed for clarity and accessibility. The interactive map featured on the homepage and overview page was created using Inkscape, an open-source SVG editor.

The language groupings displayed on the map are primarily based on the classifications proposed by Martin Maiden, a leading scholar in Romance linguistics. They are intended to give a high-level overview rather than capture every local variation.

Sources and Credits

At the moment, the individual region pages are still under development. Once complete, each page will include a section listing sources used for linguistic classifications and historical context, including academic works, maps, and official statistics where applicable.
