In the fall of 1888, a string of brutal murders terrorized the Whitechapel district of London’s East End. The killer, later known as “Jack the Ripper,” remains one of the most infamous unidentified serial killers in history. Jack the Ripper was responsible for the deaths of at least five women, all of whom were believed to be prostitutes. These women—Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes, and Mary Jane Kelly—were brutally attacked and mutilated, their bodies often found in the early hours of the morning on the streets of Whitechapel.

One of the most unsettling aspects of the case was the precision of the injuries, leading some investigators to believe the killer might have had medical or anatomical knowledge. Letters claiming to be from the killer were sent to the press, with the most famous, signed “Jack the Ripper,” giving the murderer his now-infamous nickname. Despite intensive investigation by the London Metropolitan Police and widespread public attention, the identity of the killer was never confirmed.

Over the years, numerous theories have emerged about Jack the Ripper’s identity, with suspects ranging from local butchers and doctors to members of the British royal family. However, due to a lack of forensic evidence, none of these theories have ever been proven. The Jack the Ripper case has since inspired countless books, movies, and theories, making it a haunting and enduring mystery of criminal history.
