Lorin Ashton, also known by his stagename Bassnectar, is an American DJ and electronic music producer. He grew up in the San Fransisco Bay area and identified with art since a young age. Initally, he was inspired by heavy metal and "in-your-face rap".

In the mid 90s, he was inspired by going to raves. He studied Electronic Music Production at the University of California in Santa Cruz. Soon after, he became proficient in producing Electronic Dance Music, also known as EDM.

Starting in the 2000's, Ashton began producing tracks for other artists. Originally, he produced under the name DJ Lorin. Eventually, he began producing his own albums, singles, and mixtapes under the name Bassnectar. He performed for the first time under the name Bassnectar in 2002.

Ashton created his stagename Bassnectar when he was inspired a sticker that read "Butterfly Beings Drink Bass Nectar". He decided that Bassnectar would be the name of his first heavy metal band. Instead, it bacame his stagename for his Electronic Dance Music.
