1. Research, research, research! We've put together a lot of information, but help yourself out by finding a local support group who can tell you great GF-friendly restaurants, host monthly meetings and more!
2. Check out our recipes to find healthy and delicious gluten free meals you can make! Work on perfecting a gluten free version of your favorite food.
3. Many new celiacs find their old favorite foods tempting, but don't cheat! Remind yourself that for celiacs, eating gluten is like eating rat poisen. You wouldn't have just a little rat poisen, so don't have even a little gluten!
4. Watch out for hidden souces of gluten. Lipstick, envelopes and stamps all might be a potential source of danger.
5. Look for foods that are naurally gluten-free like fruits and vegetables, potatoes, and so on. It will make your life so much easier!
6. Check your appliances. Get a dedicated celiac toaster, and avoid using wooden spoons and cutting boards which absorb the wheat and be hard to clean.
7. Eating out too oten can compromise your health. But if you're not into cooking for yourself, go to restaurants where they make each entree and you can talk to the chef directly, or chains with a dedicated gluten free menu.
8. Learn the ingredients you can and can't have. There are some tricky ones. Malt? Bad news bears. Maltodexrin? You're in the clear.
9. Always have a snack on hand that you know you can eat. Plan to keep something with you at all times so that you never end up starving for lack of something you can eat.
10. Don't panic! Many celiacs have successfully made the transition from a wheat-eater to a celiac and are happier and healthier for it!
