The Characters

The characters that can be seen in the show are one more strange than the other. The main characters are Rick and Morty but of course Summer, Jerry and Beth are really important as well. Most of the other characters come from space or from different dimensions.

Rick Sanchez

Rick Sanchez (also known as pickle rick) is one of the two eponymous protagonists from the Adult Swim animated television series Rick and Morty. Created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, Sanchez is a misanthropic alcoholic scientist inspired by Emmett "Doc" Brown from Back to the Future. Known for his reckless, nihilistic behavior and pessimistic personality, the character has been well received. He is a sociopathic mad scientist who seems to know everything in the universe and thus finds life a traumatizing and pointless experience. However, despite assuming himself to be the smartest person in the universe, there have been times where he has been wrong. Rick is a grumpy, sociopathic, emotionally unstable, bad-tempered, dismissive, narcissistic, cynical, self-centered, destructive, incredibly intelligent, alcoholic, self loathing, rude and crude mad scientist who often drags his 14-year-old grandson, Morty, and sometimes other members of his family on dangerous adventures. His intelligence makes him believe that existence is miserable and pointless, largely due to his knowledge of infinite universes and timelines with endless possibilities.

Morty

Mortimer “Morty” Smith is one of the title characters from the Adult Swim animated television series Rick and Morty. Created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, Morty is an anxious, 14 year old teenager based on Marty McFly from Back to the Future. Known for his awkward, anxious, low self-esteem, second-guessing, and doubtful personality, the character has been well-received. He is the good-natured, and impressionable grandson of alcoholic mad scientist Rick Sanchez who can be somewhat easily manipulated.Morty seems to be suffering from anxiety and is easily stressed, largely as a result of traumatic experiences during his adventures with Rick. He is often dismissed as idiotic by Rick and others, but is shown to be wiser than his grandfather in terms of understanding people's feelings, and is capable of explosive anger and moral outrage in objection to Rick's attitude and actions.Morty may sometimes act spineless, but he has shown bravery and quick-wittedness in the face of adversity, such as leading the extraction effort out of Anatomy Park, and using a pair of grappling boots to escape the guards in Intergalactic Customs. Morty is also quite responsible for his age, refusing to kill an alien child in the episode "Raising Gazorpazorp".

Summer

Summer has some personality traits of a typical American teenager as she wishes to be popular among her peers, and finds the antics of her family to be dysfunctional; she genuinely cares about them, however. She's very attached to her phone and social media, taking videos of her dog Snuffles when he became super-smart, and shuddering at the thought of her father Jerry joining Facebook. Although Summer is not as scientifically-minded as her grandfather Rick, she does possess an above-average intelligence. Summer is shown to be a whip-smart and nimble-witted girl, at least compared to rest of her family. She is also a sociopathic and narcissistic girl, like her grandfather; similar to the way that Morty responds, when truly pushed to his limits. She is also shown to possess a strong bond with her family.

Jerry

Jerry can sometimes become misguided by his insecurities. He frequently battles with bouts of insecurity and jealousy, being constantly reminded that his marriage is on rocky terms. He also has a habit of quitting when things get too difficult, which became problematic when he tasked a Mr. Meeseeks with helping him to improve his golf game. In the episode "Something Ricked This Way Comes," Jerry's insecurities lead to helping his son Morty on a science project, to which he refuses to concede that Pluto is no longer a planet. This results in him and Morty being abducted to Pluto. Once on Pluto they are greeted by King Flippy Nips and other Plutonians who hail Jerry as a 'confirmation-bias' scientist. Jerry's popularity on Pluto quickly goes to his head, giving him an inflated ego but ultimately he tells them that Pluto is not a planet after realizing his relationship to his son is more important than being “right." Jerry always tries to think of the best interest of the family, but his attempt to be the patriarch of the family can often be misguided by his self-centered nature. This causes him a great deal of conflict with Rick, as his father-in-law clearly has no respect for him whatsoever.

Beth

Beth is characterized by a superiority complex and abandonment issues, Beth gradually came to struggle with her husband over his contributions to their marriage, due in part to his lower-level position and subsequent employment, further driven by her father influencing her feelings of superiority. Since their divorce, she has focused on raising her two children. However, by the finale she decides to reconnect with Jerry and they are living together with their children and her father. Beth aspired to become a heart surgeon as an adult, but during high school, when she as already 17 years old, she went to prom dance with her classmate, Jerry Smith, possibly out of pity, and they had sex, and she became impregnated with her first and only daughter, Summer.
