Phil Dunphy

Philip Humphrey "Phil" Dunphy is Claire Dunphy's husband and father of their three children, Haley, Alex and Luke. He works as a real estate agent in California.

Phil describes himself as a "cool dad." A devoted family man, he dotes on his wife Claire and constantly tries to find ways to bond with his three kids, which quite often falls short. He uses a parenting method that he calls "peerenting", which is a combination of talking like a peer, but acting like a parent.

Claire Pritchett Dunphy

Claire Melinda Dunphy (née Pritchett) is the daughter of Jay and DeDe Pritchett and Mitchell's older sister. She is also the wife of Phil, and the mother of the Haley, Alex and Luke. Claire was a stay-at-home mom until the fifth season when she started to work for her father at Pritchett's Closets & Blinds.

Claire was born on March 3rd, 1970 to Jay and Dede Pritchett. S he has a younger brother, Mitchell. Growing up, Claire got along with her brother by bonding over stereotypically feminine activities such as gossiping about boys and practising figure skating together.

Haley Dunphy Marshall

Haley Gwendolyn Marshall (née Dunphy) is the eldest child of Claire and Phil Dunphy, the sister of Alex and Luke, and the wife of Dylan Marshall and mother of their twins Poppy and George Marshall. Haley has worked multiple jobs since the series began.

At the start of the series, Haley is portrayed as a ditzy, irresponsible, rebellious, unhelpful and carefree. She snuck out to parties or concerts, broke curfews and drank under-aged. One recurring theme with Haley is that she seems to inherit a lot of Claire's personality when Claire herself was in her rebellious teenage phase.

Alex Dunphy

Alexandria Anastasia "Alex" Dunphy is the middle child and second daughter of Claire and Phil Dunphy. Alex is evidently the most intelligent and accomplished of Claire and Phil's children. She is the older sister to her goofy brother, Luke, and the younger sister to her shallow sister, Haley.

Although Alex is younger than most of her family, she is arguably the most intelligent and well-read. Being an overachiever, she tends to address people with sarcasm and condescension, although most of the time nobody gets her humor. She is also shown to be competitive just like her mother, Claire, which she admits is because she is not used to not coming in first.

Luke Dunphy

Lucas Philip "Luke" Dunphy is Claire and Phil Dunphy's third and youngest child, and is the younger brother of Haley and Alex Dunphy. Luke is a rambunctious, playful, mischievous, and immature teenage boy who is often doing his own thing. He is also known for being a boy with low intelligence, which he has supposedly inherited from his father, who is not very smart either.

He is also thought to be a bit vacuous, because of many questionable actions, such as getting his head stuck in the banister and jumping on the trampoline wearing only underwear and a box on his head. Like his father, he is believed to have ADHD, as he repeatedly becomes distracted when he has to do something important.
